Department of Health Names Lauren S. Hughes Deputy Secretary for Health Innovation

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Health today announced that Lauren S. Hughes, MD, MPH, MSc, FAAFP, will become the department’s Deputy Secretary for Health Innovation.

“Dr. Hughes’s expertise and leadership will lead the implementation of a strategic framework for health innovation across the commonwealth,” said Secretary of Health Dr. Karen Murphy. “We are pleased to welcome a professional with her experience to our team so that we may better serve the residents of Pennsylvania.”

Dr. Hughes will lead the Health Innovation Deputate. The overall goal of health innovation is to implement strategies that result in improved health, improved health care delivery and lower costs.

Before joining the Department, Hughes served as a fellow in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program, as a Clinical Lecturer at the Department of Family Medicine for the University of Michigan, and completed residency in family medicine at the University of Washington.

Hughes also served as a visiting scholar in the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation, The Commonwealth Fund, the ABC News Medical Unit in New York City and at The Robert Graham Center in Washington DC.

She also has served abroad in Tanzania as a visiting medical student providing care for women and families, and in Botswana where she cared for AIDS patients as part of the Baylor University International Pediatric AIDS Initiative.

Hughes also is an author and national speaker and serves on a number of nationally recognized boards, including as a current member of the Family Medicine for America’s Health board of directors.
