Department of Health Awarded 2015 Harold Rogers Prescription Drug Monitoring Program PDMP Implementation and Enhancement Grant

09/28/2015

Harrisburg, PA – Secretary of Health Dr. Karen Murphy today announced that the Pennsylvania Department of Health has been selected by the Federal Office of Justice Programs to receive the 2015 Harold Rogers Prescription Drug Monitoring Program PDMP Implementation and Enhancement Grant.

“This grant will support the implementation of the Achieving Better Care by Monitoring All Prescriptions (ABC-MAP) program, Pennsylvania’s new prescription drug monitoring program, which is a top priority for the Department of Health and the Wolf Administration,” said Secretary Murphy. “The enhancement of drug monitoring on a statewide level will curb the epidemic of drug abuse in our communities and save lives in the commonwealth.”

This grant will provide the department with $409,949 over a two-year period to support the implementation of the PDMP. A prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) is an electronic database that gathers information about the prescribing and dispensing of controlled substances. PDMPs help states monitor patterns of prescribing of controlled prescription drugs and serve as a decision-making tool for prescribers.

The ABC-MAP program will increase quality of patient care by helping doctors better understand a patient’s controlled substance prescription history, give patients thorough access to their own controlled substance prescription information, and assist regulatory and law enforcement agencies in their efforts to stem the surge of drug abuse and misuse in the commonwealth.

The primary purpose of the Harold Rogers Prescription Drug Monitoring Program is to enhance the capacity of regulatory and law enforcement agencies and public health officials to collect and analyze controlled substance prescription data and other scheduled chemical products through a centralized database administered by an authorized state agency.
