Human Relations Commission Orders Commonwealth Protective Services Association of Philadelphia to Pay $3,475 for Failure to Respond to Discrimination Allegations

Harrisburg, PA - The Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission (PHRC) ordered Commonwealth Protective Services Association of Philadelphia, to pay more than $3,475 to former employee Floyd Johnson of Philadelphia, after Commonwealth Protective Services Association failed to answer Johnson’s claim of discrimination based on religion.

The order took effect July 27, 2015.

Johnson filed a discrimination complaint alleging that Commonwealth Protective Services Association fired him because his religion is non-Muslim. The commission held a public hearing on appropriate damages after the Commission found Commonwealth Protective Services Association liable for failure to answer Johnson’s allegation.

“All Pennsylvanians have a legal right to be free from discrimination,” PHRC Executive Director JoAnn Edwards said. “It is the PHRC mission to ensure that individuals can live, work and be educated with equal opportunities.”

The commission ordered the company to cease discriminating against employees based on religion, and to pay Johnson $40 for expenses and $3,435 for lost wages plus interest, bringing the award to more than $3,475.

The company has 30 days to report to the commission on how it will comply with the order.
