08/03/2017

Harrisburg, PA – Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) Chair Nancy Moses announced today the appointment of Andrea Lowery as the new Executive Director of Commission, the commonwealth’s official history agency.

“The search committee was especially impressed by the breadth of Andrea’s experience, her strong communications skills, and her leadership acumen,” said Moses. “She knows the organization and sees the opportunities.”

Andrea Bakewell Lowery, a preservationist with more than twenty years of experience, has served at the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum commission for the last six years, most recently as chief of the agency’s Division of Architecture and Preservation. She has managed the budget for PHMC’s capital improvements across the state and spearheaded the agency’s master planning initiatives.

These include managing the renovation and expansion of the Pennsylvania Lumber Museum, rehabilitation of historic structures at Old Economy Village, and refurbishment of the State Museum for its 50th anniversary, culminating in its placement on the National Register of Historic Places. She is currently managing the design of the new State Archives in Harrisburg.

Andrea Lowery brings broad experience in the agency’s diverse programs, having worked in both the private and public sectors as a preservation architect, architectural historian, and state preservation specialist. She has led variety of projects, including assignments for the Architect of the Capitol, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the US General Services Administration, and Yale University. Lowery holds a bachelor’s degree in History of Art from Bryn Mawr College and a master’s degree in architecture from the Ohio State University.

“PHMC is one of the largest and most comprehensive state historical entities in the nation,” said Moses. “It was especially important to conduct a thorough, transparent, and comprehensive search. We were delighted to discover the optimum candidate was already in a leadership role at PHMC.”
The executive director search was conducted by a committee led by Moses comprised of Commissioners Frederick C. Powell and Ophelia M. Chambliss, and Beth Hager, Director of The State Museum of Pennsylvania and Acting Executive Director of PHMC. Diversified Search, a search firm specializing corporate, government, and nonprofit leadership positions was retained to manage the search.
The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission is an independent administrative board consisting of nine citizens appointed by the Governor, the Secretary of Education (ex-officio), and four members of the Pennsylvania General Assembly appointed by the leaders of their caucuses.

The PHMC works to preserve, interpret, and promote Pennsylvania’s past through the Pennsylvania State Archives, The State Museum of Pennsylvania, the State Historic Preservation Office and the Bureau of Historic Sites and Museums.
