Harrisburg, PA - The Pennsylvania State Archives and the Pennsylvania Historical Association are now accepting applications for the 2018-2019 Scholars in Residence Program.
The Scholars in Residence Program provides support for up to four weeks of full-time research and study in the manuscript and state record collections maintained by the State Archives.
Residency programs are open to anyone researching Pennsylvania history, including academic scholars, public sector professionals, independent scholars, graduate students, educators, writers, filmmakers and others. Residencies may be scheduled for up to four weeks between June 15, 2018 and August 15, 2018. Stipends will be awarded.
Applicants are encouraged to identify relevant archival collections, assess their availability and accessibility, and discuss their research agenda with appropriate staff prior to submitting a proposal. As the State Archives is interested in making history meaningful and accessible to diverse audiences, research that is likely to result in widespread dissemination through nonspecialized publications, films, exhibitions or other means is especially welcome. Research topics that may impact public policy are encouraged.
The State Archives and the Pennsylvania Historical Association will evaluate applications based on the significance of the research proposed, the clarity of the proposal, the quality of the work and the likelihood that the proposed project will be completed, the relevance of the research topic to State Archives’ programs, the value of State Archives’ resources to the proposed topic, and plans for dissemination of the results of the research.
The deadline to apply is February 15, 2018, with notification of awards in April.

The Pennsylvania State Archives, part of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, collects, preserves and makes available for study permanently valuable public records, with particular attention given to the records of state government. It also collects papers of private citizens and organizations relevant to Pennsylvania history.
Included among the State Archives’ holdings are more than 195 million pages of documents and manuscripts; 20,000 reels of microfilm containing some 22 million images of county deeds, wills, mortgages, estate papers and assessment books; and more than 1 million special collection items, such as photographic prints and negatives, maps, postcards, posters, audio recordings, and motion pictures.
