Harrisburg, PA – The Department of State today released a list of funeral establishments that have not renewed their facility licenses.
The list (PDF) has been posted on the Department website in the interest of protecting consumers, said Acting Secretary of State Robert Torres.
“Dealing with a death in the family is very difficult. At a time like that, Pennsylvanians should not have to wonder whether the funeral establishment they choose is operating lawfully,” Torres said. “Timely renewal of a license is one indicator that the facility maintains high standards.”
All funeral establishments licensed by the State Board of Funeral Directors faced a February 1 deadline to complete their biennial renewal.
“If a funeral establishment’s license is renewed or reactivated in the future, the name will be removed from the list, said Peter Speaks, Deputy Secretary for Regulatory Programs.
“We will update the list daily,” Speaks said. “The goal is to provide accurate information that is available immediately when needed.”
Additionally, the public can check the license status of individual funeral directors or any licensed professional at the Department’s online database.
Anyone who suspects unlicensed activity by an individual or facility, or who has been a victim of unethical treatment, can file a complaint either online or through the Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs hotline at 1-800-822-2113.
