– Tammy Ferguson, superintendent of the State
Correctional Institution (SCI) at Phoenix reports the death of an inmate.
At 6:20 a.m., on September 9, inmate John
Toland, 45, was discovered hanging in his cell as officers were conducting the
morning count. Officers immediately began CPR, and medical staff was dispatched
to the housing unit. EMS was called and responded to the facility, where Toland
was pronounced dead at 7:28 a.m. by an Einstein Montgomery Hospital doctor.
Toland was serving a 10-to-20-year sentence
for burglary out of Philadelphia County.
The inmate’s next of kin has been notified.
Pennsylvania State Police will investigate the death, as is policy for all
inmate deaths. The Montgomery County Coroner will determine the cause of death.
