Secretary Wetzel Appoints Huntingdon County Native John Rivello as SCI Huntingdon Superintendent

Huntingdon, PA – John Rivello has been appointed superintendent at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Huntingdon, Secretary of Corrections John E. Wetzel announced today. Rivello was born and raised in Huntingdon County and is a graduate of Juniata Valley High School. He is also a veteran, having served in the Army National Guard. 

"John began his career at SCI Huntingdon and we are fortunate to welcome him back as superintendent," said Secretary Wetzel. "John has always gone that extra mile to learn so he can mentor and lead his staff in their mission to provide a safe and secure environment. I am confident in his leadership abilities and look forward to his continued success at SCI Huntingdon." 

Rivello began his career as a correctional officer in 2000 at SCI Huntingdon. Over the years he rose through the ranks and served as sergeant and lieutenant. He has also held several special positions throughout his career in corrections, including assistant team leader of the central region's Corrections Emergency Response Team (CERT) and liaison to the Pennsylvania Criminal Intelligence Center. 

In 2018 he was promoted to major and served in the Bureau of Investigations and Intelligence. Prior to his promotion to superintendent, he worked as the deputy superintendent for facilities management at SCI Rockview. 

Superintendent Rivello succeeds Kevin Kauffman, who retired after 31 years. To learn more about SCI Huntingdon and the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, visit cor.pa.gov.
