State College, PA – Today the Pennsylvania Department of Aging held its Statewide Volunteer Conference, which included workshops, informational sessions, discussion on the ways the department can help enhance volunteer engagement throughout the commonwealth, and an awards ceremony recognizing eight outstanding senior volunteers.
"So many of the Department of Aging's services thrive because of the commitment of volunteers," said Acting Secretary of Aging Robert Torres. "Today's conference allows us to really spotlight the honorable work of Pennsylvanians who dedicate so much of their time to serve their communities."
The conference brought together volunteer coordinators and senior volunteers from the department's network of local Area Agencies on Aging, along with department staff who are responsible for delivering aging services to hundreds of thousands of older Pennsylvanians.
During the conference, eight volunteers were presented with the 2019 Volunteer Spotlight Award for their dedication, commitment, and service to their respective programs. Awardees included:
- Grace Brown Johnson – Delware County, Chester Senior Center
- Kathleen Dooley – Lackawanna County, APPRISE
- Richard Hartman – York County, Ombudsman
- Alice Carr – Susquehanna County, AAA Volunteer Program
- Rodney Bower – Perry County, Ombudsman
- Frank Tremel – Indiana County, APPRISE
- Jay Barbaccia – Somerset County, APPRISE
- Thomas Schaaf – Erie County, RSVP
Earlier this month, the department announced its new online volunteer sign-up form to recruit volunteers to serve older Pennsylvanians. This form is open to anyone interested in volunteering, and the department will allocate forms to the appropriate county.
In addition to the form, the department released a short video about APPRISE volunteers and how they help beneficiaries make the best possible decision for their needs. As a result of the APPRISE volunteer workforce, over 195,000 individuals received free, impartial insurance counseling in 2017-18.
