DCNR Names New Park Manager for Cowans Gap State Park

Harrisburg, PA -- Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn today announced the appointment of Jeffrey Johns to manage Cowans Gap State Park in Fulton and Franklin counties.

“Jeff has been a tremendous asset to DCNR in every role he has held, and I am positive he will continue his exemplary public service at Cowans Gap,” Dunn said. “His careful, steady leadership is a perfect fit for a park that is receiving more visitors as people discover its beauty and amazing natural resources.”

Johns will manage the 1,085-acre park in the beautiful Allens Valley of Fulton County.

A 42-acre lake, large campground, rustic cabins, and many hiking trails are prime attractions. Buchanan State Forest surrounds the park, providing additional options for recreation and natural beauty in all seasons.

“I really enjoy this park, the staff and the diversity of the visitors who come here to spend time in nature,” Johns said. “I like being out in the field and am excited for the opportunity to have more interactions with guests and the community, while continuing to work on improvement projects to enhance this wonderful park.”

Johns is an avid parks enthusiast who has visited all 121 of Pennsylvania’s state parks. He enjoys watching wildlife, camping, fishing, hiking, and other outdoor activities.

Johns attended Slippery Rock University and earned a bachelor’s degree in park and resource management. He has been with DCNR since 2000, beginning his career with the department as an environmental educator at Jennings Environmental Education Center.

Transitioning to DCNR’s central office in Harrisburg, Johns worked as a park manager trainee, before taking a position with the Bureau of State Parks’ Resource Management and Planning Division for 15 years. An urge to get out to the field took Johns to Colonel Denning State Park where he spent the past six years as the manager.
