Pittsburgh, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will hold a virtual public information meeting for the public to ask questions and receive information about the proposed Mine 78 Surface Mine No. 3 mine. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 18, 2022, from 6:30 to 8:00 PM using the Webex platform.
Representatives from DEP and the applicant, Rosebud Mining Company (Rosebud), will present information on the permit review process, display maps onscreen, discuss the proposed activity, and answer questions.
Rosebud applied for the new surface coal and auger mining permit for the facility proposed for Richland Township, Cambria County and Windber Borough and Paint Township, Somerset County. DEP began its technical review of the applications on September 15, 2021 to determine if the applications comply with state laws and regulations for coal mining. Windber Borough is an environmental justice area, so DEP is working to facilitate enhanced public participation to ensure that the public is informed and has the opportunity to be involved.
The application and more information on the proposed mine can be found on DEP’s community information webpage for this project, dep.pa.gov/Mine78Surface3
