Department of Human Services Announces Plan Selection Period of New Medicaid Physical HealthChoices

Harrisburg, PA - Today, Department of Human Services (DHS) announced the plan selection period for Medicaid (also called Medical Assistance or MA in Pennsylvania) will be June 22 through August 16.

The selection period comes ahead of implementation of new physical health managed care agreements that will take effect September 1. The new agreements will result in some consumers having to choose a new physical health plan, and all consumers can review options and select a new health plan if they would like to make a change.

“This is an important step in continuing to strive for superior quality of care and services for vulnerable Pennsylvanians, and as we move through the plan selection period,” said DHS Acting Secretary Meg Snead. “I strongly encourage all Medicaid recipients to review their options, look for plans that include doctors you use and hospitals in your area, and choose a plan that best meets your individual needs before August 16.”

Notices are being mailed to all Medicaid recipients enrolled in a physical health managed care plan. The letter explains whether or not a person’s current plan will continue to be available after September 1, all options for health plans in their region, important dates, and how to choose or change their plan.

Approximately 500,000 Medicaid consumers will have to select a new physical health plan by August 16 or be automatically assigned due to the agreement changes. All Medicaid enrollees can change their plan at any point, but the plan selection period allows changes if a person’s plan will no longer be available or if they have new options in their region. All enrollees can change their plan at any point. If a person’s current plan will remain available and they do not change their plan, their current plan will continue after September 1. While no consumers will lose coverage, if someone who needs to choose a new PH plan does not do so by the deadline, they will be auto-assigned to a new plan. Pennsylvanians can review all options, changes to plans in their region, and learn how to select a new physical health plan at

These changes will not impact members in the Children Health Insurance Program (CHIP) or who have Dual Eligible Special Needs Plan (DSNP) coverage, nor will they impact members enrolled in Community HealthChoices (CHC) or a Behavioral HealthChoices plan.
