Secretary of Education Assumes Leadership Role on Board of Directors for National School Officers Organization

Harrisburg, PA – The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) has announced that Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) Secretary Pedro A. Rivera will serve as the president of the organization’s board of directors for the next year.

“It is an honor to assume this leadership role in an organization committed to advancing public education in states across the nation and to ensuring every student graduates college, career and community ready,” Rivera said during CCSSO’s Annual Policy Forum. “I look forward to continuing to elevate the issues central to CCSSO’s mission, including equity, building a strong educator pipeline, helping schools and their communities create the conditions for every student to thrive, and expanding the opportunities for every learner.”
“Since taking office, Governor Wolf has made education a top priority and I have been fortunate to be able to champion those initiatives,” he added. “I look forward to advancing them to a national platform and to working with my colleagues on best practices to benefit students and teachers in Pennsylvania and across the country.”
CCSSO's board of directors is the governing body of the organization. The board is composed of the president, the president-elect, the past president, and six directors elected by the members from the CCSSO membership.
The Council holds approximately 65-85 conferences, workshops, and seminars annually to provide research, data, and technical assistance to education professionals. It also runs the National Teacher of the Year Program, which began in 1952 and continues as the oldest, most prestigious national honors program that focuses public attention on excellence in teaching.
“The chiefs on CCSSO's board bring diverse state perspectives and a united commitment to the success of our nation’s students,” said Carissa Moffat Miller, executive director of CCSSO. “These leaders will not only help CCSSO carry out its strategic plan with fidelity but will ensure that the pursuit of equitable opportunities for students stays at the center. I look forward to working with them.”
