Department of Health Provides Guidance on Photo Identification Requirements for Health Care Employees

06/01/2015

Act 2010-110 Requires That Certain Health Care Employees Wear Photo Identification

Harrisburg, PA – Secretary of Health Dr. Karen Murphy today provided guidance on Act 2010-110, specifically the requirements of Section 809b which will take effect on June 1, 2015. Section 809b requires that certain health care employees in certain health care settings must wear photo identification tags or badges that contain specific information. Prior to the new law, there were no statewide requirements for hospital staff identification.

“The Department hopes to help health care facilities better understand this Act and how it affects current survey policies,” said Dr. Murphy. “Our guidance on this matter should provide direction to facilities as they implement the photo identification badge requirements.”

The following individuals must wear photo identification badges:

  • All employees and physicians working at health care facilities licensed by the Department who provide direct care to patients or consumers
  • All employees and physicians working at the private practice of physicians who provide direct care to patients or consumers.
  • All employees and physicians working at an employment agency who provide direct care to patients and consumers.

The badge must include the following:

  • A recent photograph of the employee
  • The employee’s name
  • The employee’s title
  • The name of the employee’s health care facility or employment agency

The Department will be reviewing the badge policies of healthcare facilities during facility inspections.
