Insurance Commissioner Named Committee Chair by National Association of Insurance Commissioners

Harrisburg, PA - Insurance Commissioner Jessica Altman will serve as chair of the Health Insurance and Managed Care Committee of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), the organization reported in announcing its leadership for 2019.

“I’m humbled to have the opportunity to work with my colleagues on a national level to convene thought leaders and engage in meaningful dialogue to identify ways to make health insurance more affordable and accessible,” Altman said.

One of the main tasks of the Health Insurance and Managed Care Committee is to inform health insurance policy among the states by monitoring and coordinating state approaches to regulation, as well as measuring the implications and effects of proposed and enacted federal legislation and regulations on states.

“I am eager to work with federal officials through this leadership position within the NAIC to implement policies that benefit consumers nationally as well as in Pennsylvania,” Altman said, noting the NAIC works with Congress, the White House, and federal agencies on health insurance issues. “This position will also give me a great vantage point to see how other states are handling important health insurance issues, and bring the best ideas to Pennsylvania.”

Altman noted one area of focus by both state and federal legislators and policy makers is controlling health care costs.  The Health Insurance and Managed Care Committee is specifically tasked with examining factors that contribute to rising health care costs and insurance premiums and reviewing state initiatives to address cost drivers.  Similarly, Congress has indicated that addressing America’s rising health care costs is a key priority for the new session.

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) is the U.S. standard-setting and regulatory support organization created and governed by the chief insurance regulators from the 50 states, the District of Columbia and five U.S. territories. Through the NAIC, state insurance regulators establish standards and best practices, conduct peer review, and coordinate their regulatory oversight.
