“Making $ense of Finance” to Educate and Protect Members of Military and Veterans on October 19

Harrisburg, PA - One in three victims of investment fraud in the U.S. are military veterans, according to a 2017 AARP study. A free program hosted in Philadelphia by the Pennsylvania Military Finance Alliance will help to increase their financial awareness and protect the assets of members of the military, veterans and their families.

“Making $ense of Finance” will take place on Saturday, October 19, 2019, at the Chapel of Four Chaplains, The Navy Yard in Philadelphia from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. It is a non-commercial event and free to participants.

A free, 12:00 P.M. lunch will feature a fraud prevention panel and keynote speaker G. Jeffrey Boujoukos, regional director of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Philadelphia regional office.

Participants will also learn to:

  • Put Financial House in Order: Invest in financial goals, maximize earnings and employee benefits, spend sensibly, map money, and borrow wisely.
  • Understand Credit Reports and Credit Scores: Read and understand a credit report, fix errors, and improve credit.
  • Build Wealth Not Debt: Set financial goals, create a spending plan, and gain control over finances.
  • Invest Soundly: Start with investment basics, including misconceptions and how to protect investments.

Members of the military are often preyed upon by scammers, who use their military background to gain trust. Because of frequent moves, sometimes on short notice, and being called away from home for months at a time, it also can be more difficult for service men and women to keep track of their finances.

Space is limited for “Making $ense of Finance” and registration is required. For more information about the conference, call 1-800-PA-BANKS or email

Supported by the offices of Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon and Congressman Dwight Evans support, “Making $ense of Finance” is made possible through the Pennsylvania Military Finance Alliance, a cooperative effort of the PA Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, the PA Department of Banking and Securities, the PA Office of Attorney General, Pennsylvania Military OneSource, Better Business Bureau, Liberty USO, Army Community Service, PA National Guard, and Clarifi. The Alliance is the only collaboration of its kind in Pennsylvania devoted to helping members of the military make smart financial decisions.
