Nature Lab Programs
Hands-on experiments focusing on science topics are held bi-weekly. All programs are included with general admission.
Creatures of the Night, Friday January 13 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM
Explore, through hands-on objects, the nocturnal world of three of Pennsylvania’s nighttime inhabitants. Learn about the great horned owl, the little brown bat and the striped skunk. Discover how many insects a bat eats in a day. Find out what can be found in an owl pellet. Or, find out what smells!
White-Tailed Deer, Friday January 27 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Join us in Nature Lab as we discover the white-tailed deer, Pennsylvania’s State Mammal, through hands-on objects. Learn about this animal and its importance to early Native Americans.
Learn at Lunchtime: Pennsylvania at War, Friday, January 20 12:15 - 1:15 PM
Join our Curator of Military & Industrial History Robert Hill as we explore our new exhibit, Pennsylvania at War: The Saga of the USS Pennsylvania. View a model of the USS Pennsylvania, followed by the centerpiece from the ship’s official silver service, uniforms and personal effects of crew members. This event is included with admission to the Museum.
Meet the Artists: 7 Lively Artists, Sunday January 29 2:00 – 3:00 PM
Join us for “Meet-the-Artists,” an event celebrating the 60th anniversary of Central Pennsylvania’s “en plein air” painting group The Seven Lively Artists. This exhibit features work by the group’s original seven members as well as active members.
The Planetarium at The State Museum of Pennsylvania: The planetarium is offering two shows from January 4 through February 26:
Don’t Duck, Look Up! (Pre-K to Kindergarten)
Created for our youngest viewers, this traditional show is a fun and friendly exploration of the sky including the motions of the Sun, stars and Earth, daytime and nighttime, and the constellations. Join Dudley the Duck on his first day outside the barn and introduce your youngster to the sky.

Compass, Calendar, and Clock (6th Grade and up)
As our ancestors learned, the sky is not just a thing of beauty... it is our window to witness the position of our planet. Understanding how our planet is aligned with the distant stars allows anyone to use the sky as a compass, a calendar and a clock. This traditionally-styled show asks the questions . . . “How can you use the moon to tell time?” “How does the sun help us find directions?” See how mankind has used the sky to tell time, track yearly cycles and find direction. Learn how to use the sky yourself! This is a production of the Jenks Planetarium, Jenks, Oklahoma.

Planetarium shows are $3 per person in addition to general admission. Planetarium admission is free to members of the State Museum Affiliate and the Pennsylvania Heritage Foundation.
The State Museum of Pennsylvania, adjacent to the State Capitol in Harrisburg, is one of 24 historic sites and museums administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission as part of the Pennsylvania Trails of History. The State Museum offers expansive collections interpreting Pennsylvania’s fascinating heritage. With exhibits examining the dawn of geologic time, the Native American experience, the colonial and revolutionary eras, a pivotal Civil War battleground, and the commonwealth's vast industrial age, The State Museum demonstrates that Pennsylvania's story is America’s story.
Museum hours are Wednesday through Saturday 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Sunday 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Admission is $7 for adults (ages 12-64), $6 for senior citizens (ages 65 and up), and $5 for children (ages 1-11).
