State Museum of Pennsylvania and Jump Street Invite Artists to Enter Art of the State: 2018 Juried Exhibition

Harrisburg, PA – The State Museum of Pennsylvania and Jump Street invite artists and craftspeople to apply to exhibit their work in Art of the State®: Pennsylvania 2018. The annual juried exhibition at The State Museum of Pennsylvania boasts a tradition of exhibiting highly creative art chosen by a distinguished panel of jurors.

 
The exhibition will run from June 24 to September 9 at the State Museum in Harrisburg. Artists who are Pennsylvania residents will compete in five categories: Painting, Work on Paper, Photography, Sculpture, and Craft.
 
“For more than half a century, Art of the State has been an incredible showcase for Pennsylvania’s most talented and diverse artists,” said First Lady Frances Wolf. “I strongly encourage any new or established artists to enter their works and contribute to this tradition of incredible exhibitions.”
 
Entries can be submitted online. Information is available at www.statemuseumpa.org. Click on “2018 Art of the State Entries” in the Quick Links list at the bottom of the homepage. The application deadline is February 28.
 
Selection jurors will review and rate all artwork submitted. Those with the highest ratings in each category will be featured in the exhibition. Selection jurors include:
 
·         Sun Young Kang, practicing artist, East Amherst, NY
·         David Oresick, Executive Director, Silver Eye Center for Photography, Pittsburgh, PA
·         Lauren Wagner, Director of Marketing and Development, Gold Coast Arts Center, Huntington, NY
 
Awards juror Scott Schweigert, Curator of Art, Reading Public Museum in Reading will determine the prize winners in each of the categories.
 
More than $7,000 in cash awards will be presented at an opening reception at The State Museum on Sunday, June 24. A first prize of $500, second prize of $300, and third prize of $200 will be awarded in each of the five categories. The William D. David Memorial Award for Drawing, in the amount of $250, will also be presented.
 
The State Museum will select one of the pieces of art for its permanent collection, awarding the artist a $2,000 Purchase Prize. An Art Docents’ Choice Award of $250 will also be presented.
 
Jump Street, a nonprofit arts organization, has been serving the Capital Region for more than 39 years, providing arts programs for students and adults, arts grants to artists and organizations throughout the state of Pennsylvania, arts-based community service programs, and technical assistance to artists and organizations.
 
The State Museum of Pennsylvania, adjacent to the State Capitol in Harrisburg, is one of 24 historic sites and museums administered by Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission as part of the Pennsylvania Trails of History.
