State Museum of Pennsylvania Announces February Highlights

01/24/2019

Harrisburg, PA – The State Museum of Pennsylvania today announced its program schedule for February 2019:

StoryTime: The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spires, Friday, February 1 at 10:30 AM
The children’s book The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spires will be read in Nature Lab. The story is about a little girl who has a wonderful idea to create a scooter from objects she finds. After the reading, children in the audience can join her quest by using gathered parts and some creativity to create their own magnificent things. StoryTime is the museum’s popular reading series for children aged 3 to 5 and is included with general admission.

Nature Lab: Ducks, Thursday, February 14 at 11:30 AM
Museum educators will hold a presentation on ducks in Nature Lab. In this hands-on lesson, participants will learn all about the aquatic, feathered birds found throughout Pennsylvania. This presentation is designed for general audiences, ages 7 and up, and is included with general admission.

Learn at Lunchtime/3rd in the Burg: Dressed for Service: The American Red Cross Knits for Uncle Sam! Friday, February 15 at 12:15 PM
History curator Katie McGowan will discuss how the American Red Cross led the effort to provide knitted goods to soldiers on the front lines during World War I. The exhibit Dressed for Service documents the service of six Pennsylvanians and the contributions of their organizations during the war. These volunteers preserved their stories through the clothing and the personal effects that they saved. The exhibit is on display through Sunday, May 5, 2019. This program is included with general admission.

Curiosity Kids: Magnets, Thursday, February 21 at 11:30 AM
In this program held in Nature Lab, young visitors will learn all about magnets. Participants can experiment with various types of magnets and see how they work. Curiosity Kids bridges the fun of Curiosity Connection with the wonders of The State Museum. Museum educators guide adults and their children, ages 3 to 6, on fascinating trips through history. Hands-on experiments in science and art offer enlightening views of the world. Curiosity Kids programs, funded in part by a grant from the Joseph T. and Helen M. Simpson Foundation, are included with general admission.
The Planetarium at The State Museum of Pennsylvania: The planetarium is offering two shows from January 2 through March 3.

Animals of the Night (Pre-K to Grade 1), Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 11:00 AM; Saturday, 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM; Sunday, 1:00 PM
Designed for children, this traditionally styled show helps viewers use their imaginations to see pictures in the sky, learn about constellations, understand basic movements of the Earth, and discover animals that can be found both in Pennsylvania and in the night sky.

Faster Than Light: The Dream of Interstellar Flight (Grade 6 and up), Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 1:00 PM; Saturday, 12:00 noon and 2:00 PM; Sunday, 2:00 PM
The impulse to strike out into the unknown to see what’s over the horizon is as old as humanity. Today, whole new horizons beckon. Astronomers are racing to find habitable worlds. But if one is found, how will we ever get there? How long will it take? What rocket designs might one day conquer the voids of space? How far can our technology take us? This program narrated by Sean Bean explores these questions.

Planetarium shows are $3 per person in addition to general admission. Members of the State Museum Affiliate and the Pennsylvania Heritage Foundation are admitted free.
