January Consumer Financial Protection Virtual Events Announced

Harrisburg, PA - Education and outreach staff from the Pennsylvania Department of Banking and Securities (DoBS) will be hosting and participating in numerous virtual presentations for groups of senior citizens, service providers, and the public throughout the month of January to promote financial capability and provide investor education.

January outreach events will be held in-person and virtually in partnership with the listed organizations. The events are open to the public unless otherwise noted.

Events For General Audiences

Budgeting for Your New Year Goals - a presentation that discusses steps to take to be financially prepared and informed for the new year – will be offered at Bosler Memorial Library (Cumberland County) on January 5 from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM. Investing 101 - an introduction to saving and investing will cover topics like the importance of saving and investing, types of investments, the “power” of compound interest, investigating before you invest, technology and investing, and diversification. It will be presented virtually on January 11 from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Schlow Centre Region Library (Centre County). Events For Senior Citizens

Fraud Bingo - a fun and interactive game that teaches consumers how to protect themselves from investment fraud by playing BINGO - will be offered at:

  • Montco SAAC (Norristown) at 536 George Street in Norristown (Montgomery County) on January 3 from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM. For additional information, contact Marcia Brown at 610-275-1960. Open to members only.
  • Montco SAAC (Ambler) at 45 Forest Avenue in Ambler (Montgomery County) on January 3 from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM. For additional information, contact Aimee Connor at 215-619-8863. Open to members only.
  • Charles T. Adams Active Adult Center at 5 East Market Street in Wilkes-Barre (Luzerne County) on January 11 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. For additional information, contact Toni Mathis, Director, at 570-825-3484. Open to members only.

Budgeting for Your New Year Goals will be presented at the Golden Connections Community Senior Center at 20 Gotham Place in Red Lion (York County) on January 26 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Virtual Events for Organizations and Service Providers

Working with DoBS – a presentation that helps participants understand our department, the businesses we regulate, and how people can work with our outreach staff, as well as the Consumer Services team. It will be held at the PA Career Link of Lancaster County at 1046 Manheim Pike in Lancaster on January 9 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM. Start Today and Retire Tomorrow (STaRT) – a presentation that focuses on retirement planning. It will help attendees determine what their retirement goals are and how they can achieve them. No matter where one is in the timeline for retirement - early career, mid-career or late career - it’s never too late to STaRT. STaRT will be presented to residents and staff of Lehigh Valley Center for Independent Living (LVCIL) at 713 N. 13th Street in Allentown (Lehigh County) on January 13 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. DoBS staff will present Investing in Women – which focuses on the unique financial challenges women face in banking and budgeting, credit, and investments – to the African Cultural Alliance of North America (ACANA) on January 12 via Zoom from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM. In partnership with the Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania, the following presentations will be available via Microsoft Teams for Girl Scouts to earn financial literacy badges:

  • My Financial Independence will be presented to Ambassador-level Girl Scouts on January 12 from 6:30 to 8:00 PM.
