May Consumer Financial Protection Events Announced

Harrisburg, PA - Education and outreach staff from the Pennsylvania Department of Banking and Securities (DoBS) will be hosting and participating in numerous presentations for groups of senior citizens, service providers and the public throughout the month of May to promote financial capability and provide investor education.

May outreach events will be held in person or virtually in partnership with the listed organizations. The events are open to the public unless otherwise noted.

Events For General Audiences

Cybersecurity and Fraud Bingo – a presentation covering key topics involving cybersecurity and protecting your information, combined with an interactive way to learn about financial and investment-related fraud through a familiar game – will be presented at the Northampton Public Library at 1615 Laubach Avenue in Northampton (Lehigh County) on May 15 from 1:00 PM to 2:15 PM. Common Investment Strategies – a presentation that provides the basics when it comes to investing, including information about Dollar-Cost Averaging, Growth Investing, and more – will be held at Cleve J Fredricksen Library at 100 N 19th Street in Camp Hill (Cumberland County) on May 18 from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. $CAMJAM – a conference bringing together experts in finance and consumer protection to discuss a variety of hot topics including identity theft, scams and frauds, and protecting yourself from them. There will be breaks for Fraud Bingo with prizes for the winners and lunch will be provided. This event will be offered at the following locations in partnership with AARP Pennsylvania:

Avoiding ID Theft – a presentation highlighting steps to protect your sensitive information and what to do in the event your information is compromised – will be held at PA CareerLink Lancaster County at 1046 Manheim Pike in Lancaster (Lancaster County) on May 22 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM. Events For Senior Citizens

Fraud Bingo – a fun and interactive game that teaches consumers how to protect themselves from investment fraud by playing BINGO - will be offered as a series of in-person events at the following Susquehanna County Adult Learning Centers. Spending Plans – Senior Edition – a presentation focusing on the need for a spending plan so that people can achieve their financial goals – will be held at the following:

Events for Organizations and Service Providers

Financial Education and DoBS – a presentation highlighting the work of the Department throughout the Commonwealth – will be presented to the York Chapter of CrossState Credit UnionsUnion Association at the Wyndham Garden York on May 1 from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM. Open to Members of the York Chapter of Credit Unions.

Investing in Women – a presentation addressing the unique financial challenges experienced by many women and covering topics on finances and investing – will be held in conjunction with AAPI Equal Pay Day at the O’Pake Institute for Economic Development and Entrepreneurship at Alvernia University at 401 Penn Street in Reading (Berks County) on May 3 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM. Legislative Expos and Conferences 

Outreach staff will be available at the following legislative expos and conferences:

  • Senator John Kane’s Senior Expo at the Red Clay Room in Kennett Square on May 4
  • Senior Expo with Representatives Cerrato, Guenst and Sanchez at the Salem Baptist Church of Abington on May 5
  • DMVA 30th Annual Health and Safety Awareness Day at Fort Indiantown Gap on May 18. Open to employees of DMVA, and PA Army and Air National Guard.
