SCI Huntingdon Reports Inmate Death

Huntingdon, PA – State Correctional Institution at Huntingdon Superintendent Kevin Kauffman reports the death of an inmate.

At 3:56 p.m. on July 30, corrections officers discovered inmate John Marlin Gelencser, 52, unconscious in his cell during a routine check of his housing unit. The officers provided immediate emergency first aid until facility medical personnel arrived.

He was pronounced dead by Coroner Paul Sharum. Inmate Gelencser was then transferred to Penn Highlands Hospital in Huntingdon by local ambulance personnel.

Pennsylvania's State Police Barracks at Huntingdon will conduct an investigation. The official cause of death will be determined by the Huntingdon County Coroner's Office.

Gelencser was serving one year, 6 months to 10 years for an offense of Failure to Comply with Registration of Sexual Offender Requirements on a Dauphin County conviction, effective January 9, 2018. He had been at SCI Huntingdon since August 20, 2018.

Facility staff has notified the inmate's next-of-kin.
