Mercer, PA – State Correctional Institution at Mercer Superintendent Melinda Adams reports the death of an inmate.
At 8:54 PM on December 2, corrections officers discovered inmate Jason Kelly, 35, unconscious in his cell during a routine check of the prison's restricted housing unit. The officers provided immediate emergency first aid until facility medical personnel arrived from the infirmary.
Inmate Kelly was transferred to Grove City Medical Center in Grove City by Superior Ambulance personnel. He was pronounced dead at 9:59 PM by a doctor at the hospital.
Pennsylvania's State Police Barracks at Mercer are conducting an investigation. The official cause of death will be determined by the Mercer County Coroner's Office.
Kelly was serving a five- to 10-year sentence for a predominate offense of robbery on an Allegheny County conviction. He had been at SCI Mercer since March 2019.
Facility staff has notified the inmate's next-of-kin.
