Muncy, PA – Wendy Nicholas, superintendent of the State Correctional Institution at Muncy, reported that inmate Ashley Hernandez, 25, was found unresponsive in her cell on April 10, 2024. Prison staff immediately responded, and life-saving measures were administered until emergency medical services arrived. Hernandez was transported to UPMC Williamsport where she received care until passing away on May 15, 2024 at 4:27a.m.
Hernandez was serving a 1-to-2-year sentence for Simple Assault 18.2701.a1 – on a Schuylkill County conviction. She had been at SCI Muncy since October 26, 2023.
In accordance with state policy, the Pennsylvania State Police were notified and will conduct an investigation. The official cause of death will be determined by the Lycoming County Coroner's Office.
The inmate's next-of-kin has been notified.
