Pennsylvania Department of Education Names Dr. Tanya I. Garcia Deputy Secretary of Postsecondary and Higher Education

Harrisburg, PA - Acting Education Secretary Noe Ortega announced the appointment of Tanya I. Garcia, Ph.D. as the new Deputy Secretary for the Office of Postsecondary and Higher Education at the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE).

Before joining PDE, Dr. Garcia spent four years at Georgetown University where she held several academic and administrative roles including Senior Fellow, Associate Research Professor, and Independent Higher Education Consultant.

“It is an honor to have Dr. Garcia join the Department of Education in service of Pennsylvania’s institutions of higher education through adult literacy programs, educator professional development, and more,” said Acting Secretary Ortega. “Dr. Garcia brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the position, and I am confident that under her leadership, she will make a profound difference on the quality of education that students receive throughout the commonwealth.”

Prior to her experience at Georgetown University, Dr. Garcia spent nearly a decade at educational foundations nationwide where she dedicated her work to analyzing and implementing post-secondary policies for all students. Dr. Garcia replaces Ortega, who served as Deputy Secretary of Postsecondary and Higher Education prior to assuming the role of Secretary in October.

The Office of Postsecondary and Higher Education participates in long-range planning for higher education in Pennsylvania and implements statutory and regulatory responsibilities governing postsecondary education and educator certification. Specific responsibilities involve the certification of teachers, authorization of colleges, licensure of trade schools, veterans’ benefits, adult literacy programs, and high school equivalency. Currently, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is home to more than 330 postsecondary and higher education institutions.
