Know Before You Go: PA Drivers Must Clear Snow from Vehicles

Harrisburg, PA – As the commonwealth braces for winter weather, the Pennsylvania State Police reminds drivers to remove snow and ice from windshields, as well as side and rear windows, before hitting the road.

According to Title 75 § 4524, drivers must have a clear, unobstructed, view of the road at all times. Snow and ice — along with any other debris — must be removed from all windows before driving. Failure to comply with this statute is a primary offense, which means state troopers and local officers may initiate traffic stops for violations.

The fine for driving with an obstructed view is $25 but with administrative and other fees added on, violators can expect to pay more than $100.

Additional penalties exist if falling snow or ice causes seriously injures or kills another party, as described in Title 75 § 3720. If snow or ice comes loose from your vehicle and strikes another vehicle or pedestrian causing serious bodily injury or death, you are subject to a fine of up to $1,000 for each offense.

Remember to plan ahead for winter weather conditions and make sure you have an ice scraper and snow brush in your car. Troopers remind drivers not to “warm up” a vehicle by leaving it unattended with the engine running. Not only is doing so a violation of the vehicle code, it is also an invitation to car thieves. Auto theft is often a crime of opportunity, and an idling engine with no owner in sight creates an attractive target.
