Seeking participants, mentors and volunteers

Harrisburg, PA – Governor Wolf’s Opioid Command Center and Office of Administration will host an open data code-a-thon this fall to engage citizens, academia, private industry and other stakeholders in the fight against opioid addiction.

“The opioid crisis affects Pennsylvanians from all walks of life and all parts of our state,” said Governor Wolf. “Through the command center, opioid dashboard and partnerships like Code4PA, my administration is taking an equally broad approach to identifying solutions to save lives.”

T
he Code4PA opioid data event will kick off on September 21 at locations in Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Registration is currently open for participants, mentors and volunteers at www.code4pa.tech.

Teams will have access to a variety of datasets and technologies to develop apps, prototypes and other ideas focused on prevention, rescue and treatment. Participants will present their projects for judging on October 20 and winners will receive special recognition from the commonwealth.

Participating teams can utilize datasets available on the state open data portal and from other sources. They will also have access to various technologies to develop apps, prototypes and other ideas using data. They can formulate projects based on suggestions by agencies involved in fighting the opioid epidemic or pursue ideas on their own. The teams will have access to mentors, workshops and tools provided through the event.

T
he Pennsylvania Office of Administration, Harrisburg University of Science and Technology, Code for Philly, Technology Council for Central PA, Western Pennsylvania Regional Data Center and industry sponsors are providing the facilities, hardware, software and other support for the event.

“With majors in fields such as Healthcare Informatics, Nursing, Data Sciences and Computer Science, Harrisburg University and our Government Technology Institute are proud to support Code4PA in addressing the critical issue of opioid addiction that is impacting so many lives in the commonwealth. By working with state agencies and industry experts, we hope that the participants can find innovative solutions to this epidemic,” says Dr. Eric Darr, President of Harrisburg University of Science and Technology.

Last year’s Code4PA attracted over 200 participants in two cities to use data from the PA open data portal and other sources.
