SCI Greene Reports Inmate Death

Waynesburg, PA Superintendent Michael Zaken reports the death of an inmate at the State Correctional Institution at Greene.

Employees were conducting security rounds on a housing unit the morning of April 24, 2021, when an officer discovered inmate William Kitchen, 55, unresponsive in his cell at approximately 6:23 a.m. Staff and medical personnel immediately responded to the unit.

The inmate was pronounced dead by the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel.

In accordance with state policy, Pennsylvania State Police were notified and will conduct an investigation.  The official cause of death will be determined by the Greene County Coroner's Office.

Kitchen was serving a 17- to 35-year sentence for involuntary deviate sexual intercourse out of Allegheny County.  He was committed to the Department of Corrections on July 13, 1998, and had been at SCI Greene since 2014. 

The inmate's next-of-kin has been notified.
