Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board Celebrates Grand Opening of Fine Wine & Good Spirits Premium Collection in Philadelphia

04/16/2021

Philadelphia – The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) today announced the grand opening of a Fine Wine & Good Spirits Premium Collection at The Granary, 411 N. 20th St., Philadelphia.

This unique store, which includes 8,326 square feet of retail space spread over two floors, features nearly 4,350 wines and spirits, including luxury products and Premium Collection spirits. The store also carries the popular Chairman’s Selection® products, which are hand-selected, highly rated wines available at significant discounts from nationally quoted prices. A wine specialist will help customers select the perfect wine for any occasion.

To celebrate the grand opening, all in-store wines, spirits, and accessories will be 10% off during regular business hours from Monday, April 19, through Wednesday, April 21.

The following public health precautions and COVID-19 mitigation efforts will be in place as this store opens:

  • A limited number of customers will be allowed in the store at any time in order to maintain social distancing best practices.
  • The first hour each store is open each day will be reserved for customers at high risk for COVID-19, including those 65 years of age and older. Voluntary compliance from all customers is encouraged in the interest of protecting the health and safety of our most vulnerable community members.
  • Customers and employees will be required to wear masks and practice social distancing, guided by signage throughout the stores.
  • Signage will also encourage customers to refrain from touching products unless they intend to buy them.
  • Store employees will perform enhanced and frequent cleaning and disinfecting, and store hours will be modified to ensure appropriate time for cleaning and restocking.
  • All sales are final, and no returns will be accepted until further notice.

According to WorkshopOfTheWorld.com, the Reading Company Grain Elevator (now known as The Granary) was built in 1925 on the site of a grain elevator that had been there since the Civil War but was destroyed in a grain explosion. The 140-foot-tall gray structure was designed by architects of the Reading Railroad and built using a continuous poured-in-place concrete process. Grain was delivered by wagon to the entrance, then stored in the silos until it was loaded onto trains and taken to Port Richmond on the Delaware River. Abandoned in the 1950s, the building was purchased in 1976 by an interior designer who converted the lower floors into offices. The silos were left untouched, but the machinery towers were transformed into a penthouse apartment (with terraces and a swimming pool). The structure was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 before being reconfigured into office space in 1986.

The PLCB worked to create a warm, welcoming retail atmosphere in the Granary while respecting the historic significance of the structure. The first floor uses the original flooring from when the grain elevator was built, and since the building is on historic registries, windows could not be added to the mid-section of the space.

This Fine Wine & Good Spirits Premium Collection has a “Made in Pennsylvania” section to highlight wines and spirits produced in the commonwealth and offers Pennsylvania Lottery ticket sales.

Throughout design and construction, the PLCB was committed to developing a store that is attractive and environmentally responsible. The majority of store lighting is state-of-the-art LED lighting, using a fraction of the energy of traditional lighting.

The Granary Fine Wine & Good Spirits Premium Collection will be open from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM Monday through Saturday and from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM Sunday. The store phone number is 215.963.9241. To find additional store locations and hours, visit FWGS.com.

The Fine Wine & Good Spirits at 1935 Fairmount Ave., Philadelphia, is now closed.

The PLCB regulates the distribution of beverage alcohol in Pennsylvania, operates 600 wine and spirits stores statewide, and licenses 20,000 alcohol producers, retailers, and handlers. The PLCB also works to reduce and prevent dangerous and underage drinking through partnerships with schools, community groups, and licensees. Taxes and store profits – totaling nearly $17.9 billion since the agency’s inception – are returned to Pennsylvania’s General Fund, which finances Pennsylvania’s schools, health and human services programs, law enforcement, and public safety initiatives, among other important public services. The PLCB also provides financial support for the Pennsylvania State Police Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement, the Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs, other state agencies, and local municipalities across the state.
