Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency Awards $1.1 Million in Nonprofit Security Grant Funds

04/05/2023

Harrisburg, PA – The Shapiro-Davis Administration announced today just over $1.1 million in funding to support a wide range of public safety security enhancement projects for 32 nonprofits and religious institutions who have been targeted, or are susceptible to being targeted, by hate crimes.

"No matter what you look like, who you love or how you worship, every Pennsylvanian deserves to live in real freedom – freedom from violence, harassment and discrimination," said Lt. Gov. Austin Davis, chair of the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD). "Unfortunately, hate crimes are on the rise nationally, threatening the freedoms we cherish so deeply. Governor Shapiro and I are committed to keeping our communities safe, and that means ensuring our churches, mosques, synagogues, schools and nonprofit facilities are safe. These state grants are vital investments in protecting these important community spaces."

Administered by PCCD, the Nonprofit Security Grant Fund Program supports grants to nonprofit organizations who principally serve individuals, groups or institutions that are included within a bias motivation category for single bias hate crime incidents as identified by the FBI's Hate Crime Statistics publication, such as race/ethnicity/ancestry, religion, sexual orientation, disability, gender and gender identity.

Applicants were eligible to apply for grant awards ranging from $5,000 to $150,000 for security enhancements designed to protect the safety and security of their membership.  Funding can be used for safety and security planning, safety and security equipment and technology, training, building upgrades, vulnerability and threat assessments and other physical security enhancements.

PCCD has issued four previous Nonprofit Security Grant Fund Program solicitations over the past three years. To date, 488 entities have been recommended for awards totaling approximately $16 million. Grant recipients have used funding to support a wide range of physical security needs, including equipment purchases and security upgrades. A full listing of the 32 recipients approved in this most recent round of grants is included below.

Gov. Shapiro's proposed budget would invest $5 million in the Nonprofit Security Grant Fund Program for FY 2023-24.

More information about PCCD's Nonprofit Security Grant Fund Program and the application process can be found on PCCD's website. Questions regarding the Program should be forwarded to RA-CD-NPSEC-GRANT@pa.gov
